„Like taking a walk through a dire necropolis.“
That sentence sums up perfectly what this record is about for me. When I heard this record for the first time I imagined myself walking through the outskirts of an abandoned city („Existence is Exile – Nothingness, Home“ and „They Herd Together To Bleat Their Hopes“) to the desolated centre („How Long The Same?“ and „Crawling Like An Insect Under The Shadow Of God“). On my way I discover some inhabitants of the lost city (every time there is screaming) and once in a while there are even moments of disturbing calm („Dragged To The Wood Pile“ and „Congregation“). At the end of the journey you find yourself, alone in a hostile city with the only people living in it against you („The Altar Of Lies Will Not Be Destroyed“).
Begotten is a great record, drenched in atmosphere, which gets thicker, the more this record progresses. It starts as an ambient record and ends as a post-metal epos. Following the script metaphor at the beginning of this review, one could say, that at first only the outlines can be seen while at the end every detail is apparent
The release of this record couldn‘t be more fitting than this time we are living in. Corona spreading across the world with more and more countries shutting their infrastructure down and cities coming to a halt. Although the situation is not as bad as the „movie“ I sketched, the recent happenings give enough room for distopian scenarios.
If you are quarantined at the moment and everything looks bleak from your windowstill, this is the perfect soundtrack.
