It’s Sunday again, which means we’re back at our Demos From the Vault. This time, we dive a little deeper into the underground of Black Metal as well as Metalpunk and a bit of Hardcore Punk. Check out another list of five releases from the underground scene all around the world and support all the acts you liked!
TIRLIM – REHEARSAL DEMO (Black Metal/Punk – Russia)
With Tirlim you can look forward to mystical, ultra-aggressive Black Metal, which goes in the direction of the first Darkthrone records, but comes across a bit more punk and less cold than the Norwegian scene heroes. The screeching vocals scream their soul out of their bodies while scratchy riffing and cymbal drumming give their best. I can’t explain this association exactly, but somehow Tirlim remind me of Urfaust, but of course in a much rougher way. If you are not into high-end production and want to enjoy some occult punk, these Russians are just the right thing for you. If you are into high quality sound, you might want to skip.

Vertical Slum – Demo (Noise/Hardcore Punk – UK)
Oh yes, Vertical Slum is just the right thing if you have had a shitty day and just want to puke. I like the hardcore punk these Brits present on their demo especially because of its noisy flair. Furthermore, you get a flawless, consistently angry sound, which encourages you to stomp, mosh and jump around, not at least due to its incredibly frustrated barking vocals and lethargic riffing. In terms of hardcore punk, Vertical Slum are definitely one of the best newcomers for me so far this year. The demo is really cool, but unfortunately it is much too short-lived. Hopefully the band will soon be spitting new clumps in our faces.

Beculted – Live in November Woods (Black Metal/Doom – Germany)
Beculted is a quite young band from Germany, which can impress on their live demo with a pleasing balance of whirlwind black metal and ambient doom sounds. The record is more than worth seeing for a debut and offers a great atmosphere and good production.If you like things á la Ash Borer or Vanum but also want to relax with slow passages weighing tons you should pay Beculted a visit and quickly lose yourself in the dark sounds. So far the demo is one of my personal favourites in the German Metal underground 2020.

Saguzar – Demo MMXX (Black Metal/Crust – Spain)
Bilbao in Catalonia is a place where it is warmer than you would associate cold forest landscapes with it but the one or other excellent band from this part of the world has already come from that has managed to convince with freezing Black Metal. Saguzar play a mixture of first and second wave Black Metal. You can find dark Blast influences from Darkthrone or Mayhem, but the punk touch of bands such as Hellhammer and similar. A very well done record, which you can especially listen to while driving a car or while being frustrated at night, drinking a few beers on your own. Saguzar are a pleasure to listen to and wants me to get more from these weirdos.

Squonk – s/t EP (Doom/Grunge – Italy)
If you are into drawings or handicrafts at night and like to be guided by gloomy dreamlike sounds, you should not miss the S/T of the Italian band Squonk. The record offers only 3 songs, but these show that the Italians have a lot of talent and quality. The stretched-out guitar playing is just as catchy as the grunge echoing vocals and takes care for an all around comfortable atmosphere. Squonk definitely have the sound you would like to get lost in and which pulls you in like an undertow. I’m curious if and when a longplayer will follow, on which the band will prove their skills and especially on the question if the sound is diversified enough on album length to captivate in the long run. The first step has already been taken with the EP. Super enjoyable to listen to and cosy on the side.
