CHEPANG, a Nepali grindcore band now based in Queens, New York, is back with Jhyappa. The album will be released on May 23rd via Relapse Records. Originally formed in Nepal in 2016, the band has stayed true to their intense style, but at the same time some new tricks in their sleeves.

The album cover itself is striking, inspired by self-immolation. Guitarist Kshitiz Moktan explains that it’s not about religion or politics but personal struggles: “Everyone has their struggles, in their own head and in life, but the only one that can fix that is yourself.”

Musically, Jhyappa brings back the old-school CHEPANG sound while introducing fresh nuances. Clocking in at under 20 minutes, the nine tracks deliver an unrelenting experience. Songs like “Gatichad” and “Ek Hajar Jhut” burst with chaotic energy while maintaining a sense of structure, reminiscent of early Pig Destroyer. “Drivya Shakti,” on the other hand, showcases the band’s hardcore and death metal influences, adding even more diversity to the sonic assault.

The sound of the album feels very raw, almost like a live recording. “Nirnaya” stands out with its gang shouts, further amplifying the relentless pace and intensity. Blast beats dominate, leaving no room to catch your breath—blink, and you might miss something crucial. Yet, for all its chaos, the album maintains a captivating sense of flow.

What makes Jhyappa truly exceptional is the balance between its chaotic grindcore roots and cultural elements. The Nepali influences in the intro and outro ground the music in the band’s heritage, giving it a distinctive character that sets it apart in the Grindcore genre.

If you like bands like Nails, Wormrot, Full of Hell, or Pig Destroyer, you should definitely check out Jhyappa. It’s not just another grindcore album—it’s raw, personal, and full of character.
