“This album explores the human condition—the struggle to love and care for ourselves in a world that often feels indifferent. But as with any art, we want listeners to draw their own meaning from it.”
This is what the band says about the general theme of their debut album and it shows in every aspect of We Fail to Love Ourselves. Every genre that is capable of bringing you unease is assembled here: post-metal, hardcore, doom, and sludge. Most of the genres mashed into one song at a time.
“The Longing” is among my favorite tracks of this album. It groves, it soars and parts around the middle of it remind me of the awesome “Predatory Void” by all-time greats Converge. “The one Percent” is another honest-to-God banger in quite a literal sense. “He has got the whole world in his hands” never sounded better outside a church than in this song.
We Fail to Love Ourselves features some tasteful guest appearances from Abi (Underdark) on the title track and Dan (Helpless) on “Permanence”. The first one add another ferocious layer to an already very strong song while the second one is a D-Beat-overture that kicks up the energy several notches towards the end of the album. The aptly titled “The End Of Us” closes We Fail to Love Ourselves. Slow and low the last amount of air is squeezed out of the listeners lungs.
Adur‘s premise may be pessimistic but you would be foolish if you don’t try to love this album. We Fail to Love Ourselves walks the fine line between emotional weight and kinetic aggression. Every lover of massive grooves and occasional melodies should find a safe haven here.
