37 years into their career and still no signs of slowing down. Immolation prove once again why they are the undisputed kings of New York death metal. Their 12th full-length Descent is set to be released on April 10 via Nuclear Blast. The band delivers ten evil tracks that make you question if the world we’re living in is hell already.
Right from the start, it becomes clear that Descent might be one of the best sounding Immolation records to date. The production is absolutely diabolical, yet organic enough to keep that raw edge alive. It feels massive without losing the dark, suffocating atmosphere that defines the band’s sound.
And make no mistake this album has all the ingredients you want from an Immolation record. It is dark and has oppressive vibes, soaring solos, frantic drumming and Ross Dolan’s unmatched vocal roars. It’s everything you expect, but executed on a level that only Immolation can reach.
Bob Vigna’s riffing once again feels completely out of this world. We all know he’s more than just a solid guitar player, but the brute force he delivers on tracks like “The Ephemeral Curse” or “Attrition” is just unreal. These riffs don’t just hit… they consume you.
What really stands out is how well the band builds tension within their songs. “God’s Last Breath” is a perfect example, starting slow and crawling forward before turning into a grinding, crushing beast. Meanwhile, “Adversary” brings back strong Dawn of Possession and Majesty and Decay vibes. Two of my personal favourite Immolation records which says a lot about the quality we’re dealing with here.
Immolation have truly mastered the art of creating an apocalyptic atmosphere. If the world ever comes to an end, this would probably be the perfect soundtrack.
Interestingly, there isn’t one single track that completely stands above the rest. But honestly, that’s not a bad thing at all. The songwriting is so consistent and so well-crafted that every song feels like a face ripper. No weak moments, no filler…just pure, relentless death metal.
Consistency and intensity have always been the foundation of Immolation, and Descent is the perfect follow-up to Acts of God. If you have friends who want to get into heavy or truly evil music in 2026, show them this album.
Descent needs to be played loud.
The true kings of New York death metal are back.
Long live Immolation.
