Ever since I saw God Mother opening for The Dillinger Escape Plan in 2017, I knew this band would be going places. To be precise: they don’t go places, they rush to them, take everything along with them and remove everyone standing in their way while doing so: unhinged, uncompromised.
11 short and one sludgy, long title track are waiting to be experienced on Köttvärld. The opening salvo of “Open Vein” and “Dopamine Wire” does not only pick apart the scab that Sinneseld left two years ago, it tears the whole limb from the body with it. “Almost Intelligent” grooves with the support of Scotland’s own Frontierer (who will also drop a new banger this year) frontman Chad Kapper. Like a rock song that got lost and is given directions via chaotic bursts.
God Mother never sounded better than on Köttvärld. It is not too clinical, but sharp enough to let the musicians’ craftsmanship and surprises shine. Songs like “Bloat Leech” take a sudden melodic turn, while the title track breaks with the whole “formula” of this album by incorporating Sludge Metal elements and ending with an epic double-bass finale (and even a saxophone!).
Although being very far apart genre-wise, Thursday couldn’t have described the sound of God Mother better than with the song title “Magnets Caught in a Metal Heart“. Nothing stays in place here. There’s a constant pushing and pulling in a very tight, confined space. Anyone who dares to step into this mechanism is bound to get shredded. That may not sound very desirable, but it surely is for every lover of chaotic Hardcore.
